Suspension of sessions

Asalaamu alaikum,

As we keep abreast of the various developments concerning the Corona virus, our Leaders and Executive Committee  have taken a group decision to postpone all Scouting sessions effective immediately. This includes Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sessions. We will be constantly monitoring the situation nationally, regionally and locally. We have informed the District Commissioner and the St Albans District Scouts of our decision.

Based on official Government guidelines, as of 16 March 2020, there has been no decision as yet to shut schools etc in Hertfordshire. However, we are aware that many of our children reside with, or have regular contact with elderly relatives who are most vulnerable which is a key factor in our decision. In addition, the nature of our activities means we cannot guarantee ‘social distancing’ (we are dealing with children after all…!) To err on the side of caution, and in the interest of our members’ well-being, we have taken a decision to postpone sessions until further notice.

The Section Leaders and their teams will be working on remote session plans to ensure that the children can still benefit from the planned sessions remotely and these will probably be in the way of some activities that they can do at home quite easily. We will forward these in the next couple of days.

We have two camps scheduled for later this term – the Cub camp and scout camp – we are liaising with both the district and the camp facilities as to the feasibility of these going ahead. We will keep everyone informed of the decisions as we are made aware of them.

We pray Allah SWT keeps you all & your families safe during this testing time. Ameen

The Chippy Hike

A traditional scout activity, the chippy hike. The chippy hike gets our cubs out of the hut and explore their local area. Our hike took in a scenic route from our hut at The Marlbrough Pavilion, along the Alban Way and ended up at one of our favourite chip shop at The Camp area of St Albans.

Air Rifle Tournament

March 2020- The Ian Woods Air Rifle Competition (IWARC) annual Air Rifle competition was held on 7th March at Tolmers Camp and attended by a number of groups from the St Albans district.

This was only the 2nd time the Ibn Firnas (Scouts) had taken part and they made a significant improvement from the year before finishing in a respectable 10th place.

Congrats to the 4th St Albans group who took home the trophy for the 3rd year running. Next year – the 20th Ansar will be gunning for the top awards!

Scout trips abroad – The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website has travel advice and details of any restrictions.

Fun in the mud!

Pursuit of the Gardening and Outdoor activity badges were the perfect excuse for the Cubs to get down and dirty in the mud at a local Community Garden! The cubs learnt about gardening tools, lit a fire and then went about getting as messy as possible! Our leaders continue to find creative ways to pursue badges in the most enjoyable ways.

The Community Garden

The great outdoors comes in all shapes and sizes and the activities will vary. The Cubs have been working on completing their outdoor badges. One of the activites planned was a trip to the Community Garden, in which the 20th Ansar have been allocated a plot of land to cultivate.

Activities at this open air session included a Bug Hunt, Learning about gardening tools and how to light a fire with a flint. Weather held out for around 10 minutes but the down pour did not dappen our sprit.
